SYSTEMS
Duncan has
been involved in Free Space Optics since 1995, when he first took a summer
internship position with A.T. Schindler Communications in Ottawa.
Free-Space
Optics is the transmission of information through the air using light - much
as ships have done with blacked-out lanterns for hundreds of years.
Free-Space Optics uses modern technology to boost these speeds to hundreds or
thousands of Megabits.
Duncan left A.T. Schindler
to pursue a role at Alcatel in England, but he was later
recruited to join Plaintree Systems in August 2000. Duncan was sought by Plaintree after it acquired the assets of A.T. Schindler Communications,
including the Free-Space Optics product line.
While there Duncan became a key
member of the product development team and eventually took on the role of
product manager. One of the documents he produced while at Plaintree was
a plain-language document created to aid non-technical staff in determining
appropriate length of optical links, based - among other things - on local
weather conditions.
