EUROPEAN
ENLARGEMENT 2004
In 2002/2003, Duncan
earned an MBA in Global Business from
GRENOBLE
ECOLE DE MANAGEMENT, in France. As a necessary requirement
of this program, he was required to submit a Master's thesis on a subject of
his choice.
Duncan chose to study the planned
Enlargement of the European Union from 15 countries to 25 that occurred in
May 2004, and the ways that this Enlargement may affect Canadian business in
the years to come. He focused on the Information and
Communications Technology Sector because most of his professional experience
had been in this sector.
The resulting work, entitled:
European Enlargement 2004: How can Canadian High-tech Benefit?
comprises 61 pages and includes several detailed analyses and predictions,
including an unusual historical analysis of the relationship between the
Canadian Dollar and the European Common Currency (the Euro) that extends back
as far as 1993 Note that the Euro was not officially introduced
until January 1st, 1999.
The analysis was
extended by combining plots of the the ECU (European Currency Unit) versus the
Canadian Dollar prior to
1999 with a plot of the Euro versus the Canadian Dollar from 1999 until the present.
The combination of these two plots was based on the one-to-one exchange of ECUs
for Euros that took place between the ECB (European Central Bank) and each
Eurozone Country on January 1st, 1999.
